An Optimizer’s Guide To Facebook Ads Performance Reports

Posted by Marty Weintraub on June 2nd 2011 in Analytics, Facebook Advertising | 6 comments

Facebook Ads, “Advertising Performance Reports” are the primary analytics marketers use to optimize FB Ads campaigns and create reports. Over the last few weeks, and through the May 25th UI update, our aimClear team thoroughly researched available optimization metrics,  what they mean, where they appear, and at what access points they are editable live in various screens. The process reminded us of reverse engineering an octopus. Simply stated, some of the most insightful analytic attributes available, are not available at a point where FB Ads account are editable for optimization. Therefore, knowing what metrics are available, where to access them, and what they mean, is crucial because you’re going to have to build spreadsheet applications to figure things out.

The results of our study, along with tons of insight and optimization recommendations, are detailed for release in our upcoming Wiley/Sybex book about Facebook Ads (“Killer Facebook Ads”), which is scheduled for release at SES San Francisco. As SMX Advanced Seattle and All Facebook Summit approach, we want to share top line results with the online marketing community, by way of this handy guide.  Below the chart, we explain what data screens comprise the chart, how to read the grid, and what each Facebook metric basically means.

For advanced marketers, we think the, “Connections” metric is the biggest takeaway, because it’s a new internal metric, which can be used for tracking internal conversion to internal FB assets. Also, we should mention that other Facebook Ads reports, “Responder Demographics” and, “Responder Profiles” can be very useful for optimization purposes. This post focuses on the, Advertiser Performance Report, because it is the root data for the FB Ads Manager UI. Read the rest of this entry »

Human Facebook Ads Machine, Addie Conner, Unplugged

Addie ConnerTo online marketer insiders, Addie Conner is a wonderful trade secret. Hailing from her rustic cabin on Walden Pond outside of Boston, she works the Facebook Ads machine at an enterprise level most PPC professionals dream about: running a Facebook marketing subsidiary for The Washington Post.

You’ve seen her speak about search PPC at mainstream conferences where, instead of creating dense PowerPoint decks, she’s more likely to  leverage Nerf balls and dart gun toys to get her point across. But don’t take this congenial young-as-she-looks lady in blue jeans for anything less than the very embodiment of next gen’ marketing meets high finance, in the vernacular.

Recently we had the opportunity to ask Addie a few questions, as she prepared to appear at SMX Advanced, Seattle next week. On Day 2 (June 8), Addie will take the stage on the Facebook Ads, Meet Search Ads session, at 10:30 am PST, along with aimClear’s Marty Weintraub. Read on for the fruits of our candid Q&A. Bruce Clay Interview: SEO, Before SEO Was Cool

Bruce Clay | SMX Advanced

Bruce Clay was SEO way before SEO was cool. His name has become synonymous with corporate SEO training. Having created one of the first iconic SEO agency brands, nestled in the lovely foothills of Simi Valley, CA, his book, SEO For Dummies is a staple.  He is a mainstay in the international online marketing conference circuit and an early advocate for the “Siloing” concept of channeling authority and energy throughout content management systems by linking.  Bruce Clay Inc. has made the INC5000 multiple times and with good reason. With a couple of advanced degrees from Pepperdine, dude  is extremely buttoned down. Bruce Clay, the agency, has a presence Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, London, Tokyo, and soon in China and Brazil.

Next week at SMX Advanced Seattle, he’ll be speaking on the Mega Session: SEO Vet’s Take All Comers, day two (June 8th) at 3PM PT.  Also, the ever ubiqutious Bruce Clay SEO Training, a full day affair Bruce teaches himself takes place as customary after ‘Advanced June 9th. It’s not too late to enroll.

On a personal note, Bruce is a real friend to aimClear, having unselfishly shared a lot of proprietary insight as to what it takes to run full day training sessions, and truly empowering us to launch the  aimClear® Facebook Marketing Intensive full day workshop. He’s a mentor and a friend, and I’m pleased to share this interview after sitting down with him in his Simi offices last month. Read the rest of this entry »
