"Create a website that meets user needs, and the search engines will help the business prosper. Fail to meet user needs and the business will suffer against its more relevant competitors. Sin against the search engines with SEO and watch the website be damned to hell."

"provide the most uniquely relevant result to the searcher" - Google's law of SEO.

Research the SEO client to find the people that it's products or services will help the most.
Be in that person's search for your client's products or services.

People who write posts illegitimizing someone else's business and/or marketing strategy are really doing it for attention themselves and when we write about them, like in this article published here, we are further giving credence to what they want: more attention....

I looked briefly at Mr. Powazek's post. "1. The good advice is obvious, the rest doesn’t work." If good seo advice is so obvious, why does every title tag on this site begin "Derek Powazek".

Here's some advice for Derek straight from the Vatican. "Make sure that each page on your site has a useful and descriptive page title (contained within the title tags)"

Is that the obvious advice or the kind that doesn't work?

Hello Todd & Colleagues -

Excellent, though provoking post. One other juju metaphor might be dark wizard (black hat SEO) versus, well, Gandalf the white. Beware dark wizards -- what goes around comes around, and more. There's an old formula in magic, that when you put out something evil, it comes back with three times the force. Religion, Myth, Scientific Darwinism and Magic theory all agree -- the Truth will set you free.

Todd, great post exposing the black hat SEO's The three view points were an interesting way to go, especially being easter and all. However, not all Search Engine Marketing companies out there are like this. I always tell people I work with that content should be written for the user not the search engine, and that keywords should be naturally fused into content. Afterall, rankings will grow over time naturally and do not need to be forced escpecially if content is great.
