I agree with Michele. If you are a savvy internet browser, and are up on current social media, then Twitter is and has been the hands down winner when it comes to the most "current" happenings, in real time.

There may be some revolt - you hear rumblings around Twitter Spam/Twitter DM. Porn has crept in and its identifying a poor process of reporting spammers with Twitter. Complaints have been it is easier to set up an account than report spam. (in the back of my mind I wonder if this process is intentional to future services - or just non-focus)

If advertising is managed similarly to how Google handles this in their email, or you have opt-in and easy spam blocking, it may not be all that intrusive. In the end, it's free to the user and I think most will just accept it. I'd guess that a shift towards marketing use over social and networking activity will dampen the freshness and transparency you have today in posts and conversation. Right now things are pretty black and white. Marketing will make it murky and it will bring Twitter on par with other social platforms.

@Michele: Right..How do you think the inevitable advertising will effect things? Will users accept it or revolt?

This is the value that Twitter offers today. And I say today for a reason. Google and other search engines are driven by marketing. What you find is what people/companies/agencies want you to find. Twitter offers conversation and buzz. What will be interesting is if Twitter is able to maintain this fresh perspective on the world or if marketing will eventually leverage it as it has for other communication vehicles. It will probably depend on where Twitter wants to go in its business model.

BTW, what you are talking about here, 'situational queries' is why we see Chris Brogan as a huge fan. If you look at why and how he uses Twitter, and how he says we all should use Twitter, it is all about situations.

Our world unfiltered.

Nice post.

Andy, I agree, though, most don't need more information for situational queries such as celebrity sitings etc. Google has yet to corner this space.

Great post Marty

@Andy Beard: No doubt! :) . However, we didn't see any bloggers outside the Waldorf, and none thought it was important enough the next day. Situational searches are before any influential (or any) bloggers get ahold of it. Thanks for stopping by Andy. We hope things are well across the pond.

If someone actually takes out their keyboard and actually writes something on an influential blog, Google can show it in 5 minutes, and it would likely have more info than a tweet.

Very interesting theory, which seems to actually be true! It sort of ads insult to injury that Google did not rank stuff even the next day. Thanks for shedding light on this topic. I'm subscribing to this feed now.
