Marty - It's really refreshing to see that you're saying the same thing I've been saying for some time now - that PPC, SEO, and social media (we can add add few more things like website usability/landing page optimization, and web analytics) are not mutually exclusive strategies, but rather work best when employed together!

"Try building each project from the ground up, without preconception of which discipline is the way to go. Be creative and think about ways to work channels together, from the earliest planning stages, getting back to our small business SEM roots."

That's some very sound advice that focuses on ROI rather than a pointless argument on which channel on it's own provides the best results.

Thanks for pointing this out, you're doing the industry a great service!

@Kristi Barrow: Right, though getting more mainstream every day, many "traditional" PR operations don't even take the simple steps of optimizing headlines. This is changing as the value of SEO comes to light. Thanks for stopping by :).

Thanks for the tips Marty, great!

I think Number 4, "Advise social media profiles and press releases with keyword research" is still a very much underused tactic today. Often the PR function of a company is so far removed from the site managers and sometimes even marketing, that they have not even heaad of SEO! The trick is to engage the PR department without stepping on anyones toes!
