What a great list. With the growth of social sites, we definitely need a checklist before we start surfing.

Here's my favorite: "If you’ve actually screwed up admit it and apologize. You must be honest online." Any viral campaign can go bad.

We all need the knowledge of PR professionals' knowledge to survive at the new digital age.

Thanks for this comprehensive post.

Very great article Jennifer! I like to measure mine by the amount of comments and community feedback. It took me awhile to create content that got people talking.

Thanks Marc - I agree, you need to think about if it goes negative in advance. And if you're an agency, it should be a part of the discussion with the client before launch.

@frostee - I couldn't agree more. IMHO Facebook is hugely overrated by marketers because don't understand or use the social media that has much better potential for WOM like Twitter, Digg or SU.

This is def a nice comp of tips, but one thing that I've noticed lately is the basic KISS rule (Keep it Simple & Stupid). Working in marketing I see companies emptying their pockets on Facebook or mySpace "widgets" (the newest thing in viral) in a desperate attempt to leverage some of that web real-estate for themselves and power through the recession. The truth is that Viral can wind up costing far more than it brings in. The bets you make should reflect that.

Look at Gotvmail just as an example. They've got a great virtual PBX service and a nice set of devotees (I admit I'm a customer). But they're viral campaign had nothing to do with the product. It wasn't a widget either. They hired Gary Busey for an afternoon, rented a cheap 3-chip DV camera and shot some weird vids. People both love 'em and hate 'em, but they're getting around, and at a point where a lot of companies assumed it was impossible to create a viral campaign out of thin air. The point being that it's possible to think too much about everything, most of all viral marketing.

Nice compilation, applying even a few of these tips and tactics should help almost any campaign. I especially like the tip on being prepared in case a campaign goes negative.
