Really interesting article. I'm encouraged that the moral of the story seems to be that advertising is evolving into useful content, not just a blinking diversion.

I also like that I have just enough Firefox tabs open that the page title reads "Don't Pee in the Poo"

Marty,

This is one of the best posts on this topic I've ever seen. You provide a strong, accurate warning to us and wrap around with really practical advice. Well done and very helpful to me personally.

I'm going to share it around the office here (oh, and bookmark it!). :-)

@ Janet: Well said "The keys come down to this: integrity, authenticity and a sense of adding value to the community." It's a hard standard to keep and hold close to heart.

@Gab: Yes, I think SSSEO's comment was a hoot and I sure did not mean to dis' him. I enjoy his blog.

You mean like the bums who've broken Sphinn's captcha and are autosubmitting loads of trash? I'll bet their SU trolls!

Also, I lvoed shady's comment (hilarious), and this line made clear to me what you meant - and it's a good point - "who network among themselves in communities they also market to , is like peeing in the swimming pool. " yeah, that's a problem. The solution? Order everyone out, dump some chlorine, wait for the ph levels to work out and dive back in :D. (How that translates to your social media metaphore I have no idea, at 1:30 am...)
