Great post. I have been learning a lot about Wordpress lately. I have started using it for my new websites in the past year or so, and it does make an excellent content management system. One of the great things it took a while for me to notice, was that you can choose a template for the different "pages" you create.

Making a new page template, is as simple as copying over the main page.php file, adding a snippet of code to the top, and making any modifications you want. It doesn't get much easier than that!

>Owning a wrench does not a mechanic make me

Very true but in less competitive term areas, a WP blog can give an advantage IMO. Each post that is written can target a long tail phrase, making the job much easier than constantly adding extra pages to the site proper. These terms are often difficult to slip into the existing navigational structure. The internal linking structure of WP is very SEO friendly (with a few plugins and tweaks) and the trackback system really helps.

The main difference though is having a client that jumps on-board with the concept and starts generating regular content, linking out (and receiving links back) from others in their niche. Our client who is best at this actually gave the job to a junior in the company, a few tips on best practice and they were away! The bottom line is, they either need to get into blogging, delegate it or pay us to do it for them!

If the blog just gets left to gather dust, it's a pointless upgrade to their site. Several months down the line it's just become a spam-fest, with post dates that make them look like a ghost company. Maybe someone can write a "Top 10 Reasons to Keep Your Client Blogging" article ;)

"Owning a wrench does not a mechanic make me." :) That is SO true! It does not matter how well a page or site is optimized for competitive keyword space if the site has NO authority. Thanks for the great comment Brian.

Having a blog or using Wordpress does not a ranking monster make. In fact, having a blog is pretty useless for many companies. The blogosphere is the noise of the masses, and the masses are rarely interested in the machinations of anything but big brands or the suddenly popular. If you're not already discussed at length on line, then having a blog section isn't going to make the wildest bit of different. Tools are simply tools - you need to have a workman's understanding of them to get their benefits. Owning a wrench does not a mechanic make me. :)
